How much money is bet on the Super Bowl each year ? The Super Bowl generates billions of dollars in betting worldwide.

Documented figures from the Nevada Gaming Commission put the total from all the sports books statewide at $132.5 million from Super Bowl 50 last year (2016). A larger percentage of bets were on the Carolina Panthers over the Denver Broncos and the over total points. Denver won and the total stayed under. The sports books took in more than they paid out and profits were $13 million on the $132 million bet. A 10% return on investment. Not bad for a day`s work but still a gamble none the less.

Most betting during the season is done on the spread and over/under totals. Prop bets and exotic wages get a lot more action and notoriety during the Super Bowl. Some are trivial at best but with over 300 betting options available. people get enticed into what looks like a “sure thing”.

The past 25 years of Super Bowl betting has been calculated at an average of $82 million with a winning average of $6.2 million for the Nevada books with a return of 7.6%. But the average for the past 5 years has increased to a record $112 million bet per year and a $9.7 million profit with a 8.5% hold rate for the Nevada market which is mostly Las Vegas.

Numbers vary from legal Nevada, but worldwide figures are estimated to be 50 times the handle from Nevada books. There are numerous wagers outside Nevada through bookies and online sports books. Some locations across the globe have legal betting online and through betting kiosks. London, England is the leader in legalized sports betting outside the US where betting on sports is illegal except for Nevada.

Some much attention is given to commercials that grab the public`s attention more so than any other time of year. There is even a best and worst ad voting contest and the ads remain a conversation piece weeks after the game is over.

But the fact is the ad sponsors will pay the increasing figure each year for a 30 second spot because of the tremendous exposure and attention from millions of viewers. The sponsors realize this is a once a year opportunity to display your message with unbounded results. It can put your product message on the map or bankrupt your company.
